We are delighted to announce the 10th International Conference on Stickleback

Behaviour and Evolution, being held in Hólar, Iceland, 23rd-29th of July 2022.

This year's stickleback conference will be structured according to an eco-evo-devo framework (Skúlason et al. 2019). In short, this framework incorporates ecological, evolutionary, and developmental (broadly: different forms of within and across generation plasticity) factors to increase our understanding of the interactive processes that shape biological diversity in nature. The threespine stickleback is certainly a well-suited model for such process understanding. The invited keynote speakers will cover Ecological, Evolutionary and Developmental processes broadly. We welcome abstract submissions for any of these areas (or their integration), although this is not a requirement for submission. We recognize the difficulties of travelling during the global pandemic, but at this stage we very much hope that we can all enjoy an in-person conference so that we can meet with colleagues to share our research.
The conference will be held over 5 days in the rural setting of Hólar, North Iceland, near the Arctic Ocean. Hólar is about 4 hours drive from Reykjavik, or 5 hours from the international airport Keflavik. There is also a good bus service from Reykjavik to Saudarkrókur or Hólar (www.straeto.is). Keep in mind that you should allow one day to travel to the North. The sixth day will be an optional day excursion to Lake Mývatn, a geothermal area in the North East, also famous for its 40-year-old monitoring of the lake and its stickleback population. A BBQ style dinner will be organised at Hólar on the third evening and hosted in collaboration with the local brewery.
Note that the conference is limited to 80 –100 participants

Tuesday 26th:
Half day workshops (morning)

Wednesday 27th:

Thursday 28th:
Keynote: Isabel Smallegange (onsite)

Scientific program
Friday 29th:
One day excursion to Mývatn (optional)
We are looking forward to enjoying an on-site conference again and there will be ample time to socialise. There will be enough time to take a stroll in the local forest or reach the plateau just behind Hólar to enjoy the unique summer light at this latitude.
Please note that because of its unique rural set up the conference will only be full board (see below accommodation and diet options).

Want to extend your trip?
Hólar is a village in the municipality of Skagafjordur. In this fjord you can enjoy horse riding, a trip to Drangey Island (puffins sighting), a dip at the pool over the basaltic columns at Hofsós, a visit to the herring museum in Siglufjordur, the famous Icelandic turf houses (Glaumbær), or go rafting on a glacial river! These famous attractions are just within 50km around Hólar.

Hólar is also just about 1h20 min drive to Akureyri, which is the largest city in North of Iceland.
Iceland is in general well set up for tourists, with multiple options on activities all over the country for example whale museum in Húsavík, Stuðlagil in Jökuldalur and the glacial lake Jökulsárlón in East Iceland. The golden circle in south Iceland, Snæfellsnes peninsula, the Westfjords circle is also a stunning drive with more rural areas.

Call for abstracts is closed!

We invite authors to submit abstracts to present at this year's conference using the guidelines below. The scientific program will consist of 12 min talks (+ 3 mins for discussion) and a poster session. The poster session starts with “flash talks” (a 3 min presentation per poster). Please specify your preference for a talk or a poster when submitting your abstract.
The deadline for the abstract submission is March 31st, 2022.
Please submit your abstract using the link below. Abstracts must be written in English. Please ensure that contact details of the presenting author are submitted correctly.

Abstract submission guidelines:
  • Title – provide a brief title which clearly describes the nature of the work
  • Presenting author – please provide the full name of the presenting author.
  • Contact details – email address of presenter
  • Institutional affiliation – please provide the presenters institution, department name and country
  • Full list of authors – please provide full list of authors, without titles.
  • Text of abstract – Please limit text to 300 words
  • Preference for poster or oral presentation
