The aquaculture diploma is a one-year program, comprising two semesters (62 ECTS credits, autumn and spring) of theoretical and practical studies, and a period of vocational training (28 ECTS credits). The aim of the program is to educate specialized aquaculture practitioners for future employment within the industry.
The study periods are organized into ten consecutive 2-4 week courses offered through a hybrid of online distance teaching and in-house practicums. The vocational training period is 12 weeks and conducted within aquaculture stations after all other courses have been concluded.

Admission requirements
Icelandic matriculation (Stúdents próf: school leaving examination after four years of secondary school) examination or equivalent.
Mode of study
Full time study or part time study.
Programme requirements
Students should finish the diploma (90 ECTS) within three years from first enrolment.
Knowledge, ability and skills
At the conclusion of the program, the student should
-understand the basic environmental requirements of fish in aquaculture
-have an understanding of production planning in aquaculture
-understand main factors affecting fish health and welfare in aquaculture
-have an overview of laws and regulations on aquaculture in Iceland
-have an understanding of sustainability and the environmental impact of aquaculture
-be able to describe and understand how different equipment used in aquaculture stations work
-be able to monitor environmental parameters associated with the requirements of farmed animals and the environmental impact of aquaculture
-be able to operate common equipment used in aquaculture stations
-be able to collect, analyse and present information
-be able to communicate both in English and Icelandic
-be able to apply critical and innovative thinking
-be able to preserve quality from life fish to marketable product
-be able to identify critical points in relation to human health and safety in the operation of an aquaculture station
-be able to work independently and in a group
-have developed the learning skills to continue studying at the B.S. Level

This program offers theoretical knowledge, practical activities and visits to major companies in Iceland. Students also get insight into laws/regulations and innovation within the sector. This program is a University degree suitable for people both new to the sector, as well as people with previous experience in connection to aquaculture.
The diploma is composed of 10 short courses (2 to 4 weeks) comprising online lectures and discussions, with 2/3 days on-site sessions in each course. On-site sessions are mandatory and involve hands-on activities at Hólar University or in the industry, and visits to various companies.
The 10 short courses run one after another and do not overlap.
After completing the course work successfully, the student attends for a 12-week internship/vocational training in the industry where he/she apply knowledge, competences, and skills acquired during the course work. The internship period is classically taking place in summer for a continuous 12 weeks.
If students are studying and working in the industry, students are encouraged to go for an internship in a different place/company than their employer. An extra cost for supervision and visit onsite from teacher(s) applies to the internship internship summer course.
